Founder, Principal

Calvin is the founder and Principal Mechanical Engineer for HZA. Calvin began his career in 1983 working for a mechanical contractor while pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alaska – Fairbanks. Over his 30-year engineering career Calvin has provided engineering solutions for projects all across the State of Alaska from the North Slope to southeast and the Aleutians. His expertise covers a wide variety of facility types, including urban commercial, civic, health, and educational; various remote facilities such as rural schools and health clinics, as well as production facilities on the North Slope. Calvin has provided engineering expertise on numerous LEED certified projects, and enjoys finding solutions to complex engineering problems found in Alaska’s challenging environment.

Chief Electrical Engineer

Buck is Chief Electrical Engineer for HZA. Buck began his career at HZA as a student intern in 1999. After graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University, he joined HZA full-time in 2000. Buck is a lifelong Alaskan and understands the unique challenges associated with the construction and operation of facilities and systems in Alaska.  He excels at working with facility owners, users, contractors, and other designers to come up with practical, cost and energy effective solutions.  His experience includes lighting, power distribution, fire alarm, telecommunication, audio visual, security, and power generation including back-up generators and alternative energy systems such as photovoltaic (solar) and wind turbines.

Senior Electrical Engineer

Brett is a Senior Electrical Engineer for HZA. Brett began his career working for an electrical contractor while pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. In 2001, Brett joined HZA as a student intern and has been working full time at HZA since 2005. Brett is a lifelong Alaskan and understands the unique challenges associated with the construction and operation of facilities and systems in Alaska. Brett has been project manager and lead design engineer for a variety of facility types and has extensive experience with healthcare related projects and high-rise office buildings. Brett places particular emphasis on producing well coordinated documents, client communication, and positive team relationships.

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Randy is a Senior Mechanical Engineer for HZA. Randy joined HZA in 2009 after obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University. Randy has been the project manager and lead design engineer for a variety of projects, including educational facilities, health clinics, medical office buildings, public safety facilities, and civic buildings. Randy has experience working on projects starting at conceptual design through final construction documents, for design build type projects as well as design bid type projects. Additionally, Randy has experience working with architectural and other engineering disciplines coordinating mechanical systems, providing project specific specifications, and construction phase support.

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Tim is a Senior Mechanical Engineer for HZA. Tim began his career at HZA as a student intern in 2008. After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Alaska – Anchorage, he joined HZA full-time in 2010. Tim was born and raised in Alaska, and understands the states unique climate and geographical challenges. Tim has been the project manager and lead design engineer for various projects, including fire stations, public safety facilities, medical office buildings, surgery centers, vehicle storage facilities, health clinics, apartment renovations, boiler replacements, chiller replacements, and tenant improvements. In addition to HVAC and plumbing experience, Tim also has experience with heat recovery systems, heat pumps, medical gas systems, vehicle exhaust systems, compressed air systems, and providing unique infrastructure for owner provided equipment.

Michael Stanfill, PE

Mechanical Engineer

Michael is a Mechanical Engineer for HZA. Michael graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2014 from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and joined HZA that fall. Though typically concentrating on projects in the medical industry, Michael has gained a wide range of project manager and lead design engineer experience through various education, rural, civic, and private sector projects. He enjoys a hands-on and highly-coordinated design approach as well as being involved in the construction process after completion of the design phase.
